Charles Turner who was stud groom at the Hermitage during WW1. He lived at Hermitage Cottage and was a skilled horseman. Before living at the Hermitage they were in Chelford and Pendleton in Lancashire where his four sons were born, three of whom served in WW1. After the Hermitage Charles became a publican in Macclesfield.

Willie Davis lived at Dane Bank and served in the Royal Field Artillery in WW1. He was gassed and invalided home but survived.

Charles Harold Turner was born in 1894 and in 1911 was living in Cranage and working as a cotton spinner's clerk. He served in the Army Service Corps and was sent to France in 1915 with the British Expeditionary Forces and promoted to sergeant.

William Johnson from Holmes Chapel joined the Sherwood Foresters and was awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous act of gallantry in February 1918.
